County
Fairs receive state aid for two years' worth of projects
(DES MOINES) – Local
county fairs are the beneficiary of a piece of the more than $1
million in state aid granted to the state's county fairs. The news
was highlighted by a visit to the Capitol by the Association of Iowa
Fairs, which has served Iowa fairs since 1907.
"This is a wonderful
opportunity to attract people to our area," said State Rep. Tom Sands
of Columbus Junction. "County fairs are a great way for families to
experience some of the best Iowa has to offer."
Des Moines County

"Fairs revolve
around our youth, and this is a great investment in helping to develop
their character and esteem," said Sands. "There is so much time
needed, and volunteers are a great resource at the fair. This funding
will better help them in their service."
According to the
Association of Iowa Fairs, more than 2.2 million people attended
county and regional fairs in 2003. The total statewide economic
impact realized from these fairs in 2003 was more than $180 million.
These numbers do not include the state fair.
